Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Series review: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Hey witches! Don’t worry, we haven’t given any major spoilers…

Another reboot alert! Just in time for a spooky Halloween, Netflix has released the whole of season one of it’s new series ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ on the 26th of October.

The series is based on the namesake comic book series and was decided to be released as a TV series adaptation to companion popular Netflix show ‘Riverdale’.

Whilst the original show was based on a different comic (also being its namesake), certain similarities still ran throughout the variations of Sabrina comic books such as names and some general themes. However, the chilling reboot series conjures much more of an opposing feeling.

The reboot is way darker compared to the hilarious and light-hearted show it once was, with the ideology of witches worshipping Satan himself. Where Sabrina from Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s biggest issue would be a spell going awry and possibly turning someone into a pineapple (Libby did deserve it), the new Sabrina has way bigger issues to deal with, finding her life and mortality being at risk. Champagne problems, eh Sabrina the Teenage witch?

I for one, am a massive fan of the original series yet am completely drawn in by the new, dark and twisted direction the reboot takes us in and can’t wait to finish off the season! From the gore and heart pounding thrills to the unexpected twists and turns, we’ve been given a brand new show, still encompassing the kind and thoughtful character of Sabrina through an unexpected lens of Satanist rituals and sacrifice.

One thing I’m sad about? I don’t want to sound catty but come on… Salem not talking? That sucks! Who didn’t love Salem’s highly relatable sassy and witty remarks as well as his one-liners throughout the original series?

LVL rating: 8/10. The show keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering what choices Sabrina will take. Although it has been difficult letting the bubbly original series go, the new characters have a new spin sparking an interest in the viewer and allowing you to be open-minded for what’s to come.

Suggestions to LVL up: More magic please! I’d definitely want to see Sabrina use more of her powers. I would also want to see a bit more humour pop up here and there to break the tension, though it seems that Aunt Hilda is working on that already!

Best witches to the new show from LVL!
